Windows will encounter problems and errors in times, for troubleshooting and to fix problems you will need recovery media. Your system might have come along with the recovery image in the recovery partition. If you need to free up the recovery partition space you can move the recovery image to the USB drive.
Windows 8.1 has the option to create recovery USB drive with inbuilt tool. Windows will inform you how big your recovery media will be and how big USB drive you need to create recovery media.
Note:
If the USB drive has any other important files or data’s it is recommended to copy that files to the safer location. Creating recovery media will delete all data and files in that drive. It’s preferred to use empty or new USB drive to create recovery media.
If your system came up with windows 8 and you upgraded to windows 8.1. Your recovery partition will have only windows 8 recovery image. In the recovery drive you create it will have only windows 8. After resetting or refreshing windows you need to upgrade to windows 8.1
Create USB Recovery Drive
1. Click or tap on the search
2. In the search enter Recovery Drive and then in search result click or tap on create a recovery drive
3. It might ask you user permission or admin password
4. Once the recovery drive tool is open make sure that copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive check box is selected.
5. Now click or tap on next
6. Insert a USB or Flash drive with least capacity of the recovery media displayed in the screen
7. Select the USB or Flash drive you want to use it as recovery drive by click or tap on the particular drive
8. Now click next and then click or tap on create
The recovery image and the necessary files will be copied to the removable disk you specified and the process might take some time. Time depends on your recovery image and the system.
Once the file is copied to the recovery media do one of the following
• If you want the recovery partition on your system click on finish
• If you want to delete the recovery partition from the hard disk tap or click on delete recovery partition and then click or tap on delete. It will delete the recovery partition from the hard disk and free up the space. Finally click or tap on finish.
Remove the USB drive and keep it safe you will need it for refreshing or resetting windows.
Note:
Don’t save any other files in that USB drive, it’s not recommended doing such activities.
If you system doesn’t have the recovery partition Copy the recovery partition from the PC to the recovery drive checkbox is greyed out and only recovery tool and the bootable image are copied. This recovery drive cannot be used for refreshing or resetting the windows.
